Princess of the year by bealor Princess of the year by bealor
I present to you, all the official Disney princesses, in the fashion of the year their representative films premiered.

This took forever, seriously, had to do a lot of research and stuff. But it was really fun to draw :)

Some notes regarding my choices: I went for what could be accurate for the time AND what I think the girls would personally wear. If you don't agree with me that's fine, but remember that our perception of fashion is really personal and it's different around the world (I'm Swedish, so this is how I've seen it).

In case anyone else wonders who they are:
Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel and Merida
The official princess line up.

the 80s and 90s had some weird fashion choices. :P the first and last three are all cute

Was born 1991. Belle is definitely wearing my mother's clothes. I love 'em all. And totally agreeing with earlier comment that Merida = Lorde lol

This is fantastic. I love the 91 choice, its like that weird point where the 80s ended but the 90s hadn't gotten the memo yet.

seriously this is adorable.

Beauuuuuuuuuuuuuuutiful :)
But Rapunzel and Merida are ©dreamworks 🙊

:iconbaselessconclusion:
Merida is from Brave and that is Pixar. Disney bought Pixar before the movie was released so I would say she can be included here though.

Tangled was directly made by Walt Disney Animation Studios, so I don't know where you are coming from saying Rapunzel shouldn't be there.

Neither were made by or affiliated with DreamWorks.

I like Snow White the best, here. She just works, you know? Plus, 30s fashion is best fashion.

Actually, if you look at each princess's hair (especially before from early 1990s and back)--each princess is wearing the popular hairstyle of the decade that the movie was made. For Belle it's more natural and pulled back in a ponytail, Ariel has the 80s big puffy hair, Aurora is very late 50s early 60s (younger woman hairstyle), Cinderella has a 50's hairstyle, and Snow White has the bob and curl / perm popular in the 30's.

Most of the later movies didn't have that as much but tried to reflect a more era-related hairstyle for the story (like Tiana, Pocahontas, Jane, etc). Rapunzel's hair getting cut off into a perfect modern haircut in the end was a bit of a throwback to older movies incorporating modern fashion trends into the story. I don't care either way, but I thought it was interesting. :D

It' still at least a niche market (p.e. see this charmer of a shop - no, I am not getting any money of the owner: www.decennies.com/ ), so there are more fans than you might think of...!

Absolutely outstanding work! The clothes are dead on realistic for the times, and I love the way Mulan and Merida's clothing captures their personalities. Textures are gorgeous!! The only change I'd make is to put Tiana in either a solid black or solid white dress (chef colors), but she also looks great as is.  And as an 80's survivor I have to say Ariel is priceless  Wink/Razz

It's less "businessy" clothes, and moreso the private school girl look that was popular at the time, between Clueless, Aerosmith's 'Crazy' and 'Cryin' music videos, it was a pretty big year for knee socks, blazers, and whatnot.
